Sample To Cancel an IRS EIN

An Employment Identification Number is only assigned one time. Whether it is used to file a company’s taxes or not, it will never be reassigned to a new business. With that being said, the IRS cannot cancel your EIN. If you were to ever revive your business, it would use the same EIN regardless of how much time has passed. However, your business account with the IRS can be closed. In order to close your business account you would need to draft a letter to the IRS requesting that your account be closed, along with the reason that you would like the account closed. If possible, include the copy of the EIN Assignment Notice what was given to you when the EIN was assigned.

Before closing your account you must meet the following criteria:

1.) Your organization must not be liable for any business taxes
2.) You organization must not have made a federal tax deposit or other federal tax payment
3.) All applicable tax returns must be filed

Note: Exempt Organizations require special handling. Contact an Enrolled Agent for more information.
